Silverstone's 90s-style retro case imaginable

If you like beige PCs, you can pre-order Silverstone's FLP02 case. The manufacturer is intentionally making it look old-fashioned.

First retailers are adding Silverstone's FLP02 case to their product lines. It is the second model in a retro series designed to evoke PCs from the 90s. While the FLP01 was a horizontal case for multimedia computers (HTPC), the FLP02 is a vertical tower for motherboards in ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX, and SSI-CEB formats.

Contrary to the industry-wide trend, the FLP02 features a cage for three 5.25-inch drives, for example, for installing a DVD or Blu-ray drive. Those who don't need one can install blank panels that are meant to resemble floppy drives but have no function.

The rest of the internal structure is based on modern cases. The power supply is hidden at the bottom behind a cover, where there is also space for cables. Two vertical PCI-Express brackets allow for vertical installation of a graphics card, which may then only occupy two slots. A height-adjustable support prevents horizontally installed graphics cards from sagging. It can be up to 386 mm long if no hard drive cage is installed in the center front. Otherwise, the graphics card is limited to 279 mm.

Beneath the floppy drive blanks is a front panel with a power rocker switch, a rotary key, reset and turbo buttons, and an LC display. The rotary key can be used to lock the reset button.

The turbo button is coupled to a fan hub inside; when activated, the hub accelerates all connected fans to 100 percent speed via PWM signal. The LC display shows digits for the fan speeds. The turbo is more of a gimmick than a useful function.

The FLP02 supports numerous fans: two 120 mm models in the front, three 120 mm or two 120 mm in the top, and one 120 mm or 140 mm at the rear. Correspondingly, a 280 or 360 mm radiator for water cooling also fits in the top. Three black 120 mm fans are included in the scope of delivery. There are removable dust filters at the front, top, and bottom of the power supply.

The case is 232 mm wide, 494 mm high, and 472 mm deep. According to the datasheet, it weighs approximately 9.8 kilograms. The I/O panel is hidden at the top front. It provides audio jacks and three USB ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1, formerly called USB 3.0), one of which is a Type-C port. In total, there are mounts for six storage devices: four combi cages for 3.5- and 2.5-inch models and two 2.5-inch mounts primarily for SATA SSDs.

Silverstone recommends $240 (excluding taxes) for the FLP02. Alternate undercuts the price in this country (starting from 219,90 €). Delivery is expected to begin in three to four weeks.
