Vertigo Games has announced the release date for "Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow." The revival of the stealth classic from the nineties will be released on December 4, 2025, digitally for Sony's PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, as well as PC VR headsets via SteamVR, and can be pre-ordered now. Accompanying this, two new trailers show gameplay scenes from the versions for Meta Quest and PS VR2.
Graphics comparison: Hardly any differences between Quest 3 and PS VR2
Both trailers show the same mission: the thief Magpie sneaks through a dark alley and infiltrates a building. She uses her bow to activate a winch or extinguish fires. She repeatedly sneaks past patrolling guards this way. It is remarkable that the two trailers show no significant differences in graphic quality. Both the console version and the mobile Quest 3 version offer a graphically equivalent image with atmospheric light sources, shadows, and details like rising smoke above fireplaces.

How the atmosphere in the final game translates to the respective VR headsets remains to be seen. The OLED displays of the Playstation VR 2 naturally offer better black levels and slightly richer colors than the LC displays of the Quest 3. The latter, in turn, benefits from a clearer image thanks to the pancake lenses..
Gameplay interesting: In an earlier gameplay video, the developers already showed that audio and controller haptics are intended to play an important role in solving stealth puzzles. In the new trailer, Magpie uses a kind of scanner with which she can detect tracks, like with a black light. In one scene, players find scratch marks on the wall above a picture frame and then have to feel for a secret switch on the frame. The haptic feedback thus seems not to be limited to lockpicking.

Return after more than ten years hiatus
The Thief series is considered the founder of the modern stealth genre. The first part was released in 1998, the last installment to date in 2014. The VR version is intended to be more closely aligned with the roots of the series and, compared to other more action-oriented VR stealth titles like Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, to emphasize evasion and observation.
