Turn-based combat is coming to “Pillars of Eternity”: The role-playing game, released in 2015, will receive a new update that enables turn-based tactical combat instead of the real-time tactics previously implemented. Players will be able to choose which option they prefer to play in the future. If desired, they can also switch back and forth quickly, as Obsidian lead developer Josh Sawyer explains in a video.

The update is unusual, as “Pillars of Eternity” is now over ten years old and has actually not received updates for years. However, two small patches were released in 2024; with the turn-based game mode, an even larger update is now pending. The successor “Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire” was also retroactively supplemented with a turn-based tactics mode.
Turn-based tactics are established
Expanding a role-playing game designed for real-time combat with a turn-based mode is no small feat: many abilities need to be rebalanced, and new systems must be developed from scratch. In the announcement video, Josh Sawyer provides insight into the work Obsidian has put into this. For example, in turn-based mode, the damage of abilities is increased so that combat does not drag on for too long.

Classic top-down role-playing games are often played in real-time mode, including the first two “Baldur's Gate” installments. In recent years, however, the turn-based mode has proven its worth for their imitators: Owlcat has offered a turn-based mode from the start alongside real-time mode in “Pathfinder Kingmaker” and its ssuccessor, “Wrath of the Righteous.” Industry leader Larian, on the other hand, has relied exclusively on turn-based tactics with the “Divinity” games and later with “Baldur's Gate 3,” achieving great success.
The turn-based mode in “Pillars of Eternity” is scheduled to be released first as a public beta on November 5th on Steam and in the Xbox PC Store. There is no release date for the final version yet.
