US game studio Rockstar Games has once again postponed the release of the highly anticipated title “GTA 6”. It is now scheduled to be released on November 19, 2026, which is over a year away. This is almost exactly half a year later than the most recent release date of May 26, which itself already represented a significant delay. The reason for the renewed delay, however, does not differ from the previous one. Rockstar Games explains, “these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of quality you expect and deserve,” the statement reads. The stock of the parent company Take-Two subsequently fell by more than 6 percent in after-hours trading.
Enormous Expectations
“Grand Theft Auto” is one of the most famous game series in the world, with the first part released in 1997. The titles are known for the great freedom of gameplay; the open game worlds can always be explored freely. For this purpose, not only many different vehicles are available, but also a wide variety of activities. For example, the game characters can try their hand at sports, organize car races, or simply walk around. The latest installment to date, “GTA 5”, has sold over 220 million copies worldwide, with only Minecraft selling more. Expectations for “GTA 6” are therefore enormous.

The setting for “GTA 6” is said to be a fictional version of Miami; preview films show a female protagonist for the first time. Originally, Rockstar Games had only vaguely announced the title for 2025, then the game studio first set the date for autumn this year. In May, the date was then postponed to 2026, now the next date change follows. Speaking to GamesBeat, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick justified the move with Rockstar's “extraordinary” ambitions. It is always painful to delay a title, quoted by Bloomberg, he said in a statement on the release of financial results: “In retrospect, we never regretted it.” If rivals have released unfinished games, it has been at their own risk.
