Valve confirms: No new Half-Life: Alyx and end of the Valve Index VR headset
Valve is discontinuing production of its PC VR headset Index and simultaneously confirms that no in-house VR games are in development – not even a new Alyx.
Five years ago, the Valve Index and "Half-Life: Alyx" shook up the VR world. Now, Valve is releasing a new VR headset, but Alyx is being left out.

During a conversation with the tech channel “Adam Savage’s Tested,” Jeremy Selan, an engineer at Valve, officially confirmed the end of the Valve Index. Production has ceased, Selan emphasized, but they intend to continue supporting the device long-term. An explanation of whether these plans extend beyond pure software support and whether spare parts will remain available is still pending.
On the official shop page, the VR headset is still available for 539 euros, but without controllers and the necessary tracking stations. These and other accessories are also still available, but the Index controllers are out of stock. The technically dated Valve Index was one of the most popular high-end PC headsets since its release in June 2019, impressing with excellent tracking, high-quality visuals, and innovative headphones that didn't rest directly on the ear.
Half-Life: Alyx will not be continued for now
At the same time, Valve is dashing the hopes of many VR enthusiasts: The Steam operator is currently not working on any new VR games. This emerged from an interview by VR magazine “Road to VR” with the team behind the Steam Frame headset announced for 2026. When asked if a VR game from Valve was in the works, an employee answered clearly and unequivocally with “No.” This also means that a possible “Half-Life: Alyx 2” is off the table—at least for now.
When the Index was announced in 2019, Valve simultaneously promised a “flagship VR game” and presented “Half-Life: Alyx” in the spring of 2020. To this day, Alyx is considered the benchmark for VR game design in terms of interaction, storytelling, and technical implementation. After its release, it noticeably boosted demand for the Valve Index and led to a surge in the premium VR segment.

Since then, the persistent rumor has been that Valve is working on another VR game—possibly an asymmetrical title where PC and VR players compete against each other. Whether such a project ever existed or was discontinued long ago remains open. What is clear is that there will be no VR game from Valve at the launch of the new Steam headset, Steam Frame.
