After a long development period, Glen MacArthur (Handle Gmaq) has released version 25 of his Linux distribution AV Linux. It is aimed particularly at content creators such as musicians and video producers.
In the Version announcement for AV Linux 25 MacArthur writes that development has been busy. For this, the distribution is now available in two flavors: as before with the Enlightenment desktop (shortly referred to as AVL) and new with the Moksha desktop from the Bodhi Linux project, which MacArthur calls MX Moksha 25 (or MXM for short). AV Linux is somewhat more streamlined, but still represents a full-fledged and production-ready system for content creators, explains the maintainer. MX Moksha, on the other hand, includes AVL's utility structure, but with a minimal app base, it is thus easier to adapt to users' wishes.
Both flavors are based on MX Linux 25, which was released about two weeks ago and is based on Debian 13 (Trixie). AV Linux continues to rely on the Liquorix kernels, which have significantly reduced latency and are therefore intended to offer better reaction times for music and video production. While AVL comes with the Enlightenment desktop environment and a "flat" look, MX Moksha welcomes users with a colorful desktop.
Program fine-tuning
Gmaq has tinkered with the Thunar file manager, extending and improving its file actions and core functions. The "Open with" dialog should now, for example, directly allow starting virtual machines with "Quickemu" and downloading videos with "yt-dlp". The optional Wine4VST utility was created specifically to install VST plug-ins for Windows functionally in AVL and MXM. On first start, a setup wizard runs, performing the rudimentary configuration – after a fresh installation of AV Linux from the live system to the local drive, it starts again, but only once.

Current ISOs are available for download on MacArthur's website. There is a directory for AV Linux 25 and one for MX Moksha 25.
In early 2024, MacArthur released AV Linux 23.1 and thereby completed the switch to MX Linux 23 and Debian 12 (Bookworm), respectively. Some version maintenance followed in January of this year with AV Linux 23.5. Since then, it has been a bit quieter around the AV Linux project.
