At Instagram, all employees are to return to the office five days a week starting in February, marking the first major rollback of remote work policies within the Meta group. This is reported by the tech magazine Sources, citing an internal memo from Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. He writes that employees are more creative and collaborate better in the office. He experiences this every time in New York, where the home office culture is less prevalent. At the same time, he states that Instagram has too many meetings. Therefore, all recurring consultations will be canceled every six months, and only those that are "absolutely necessary" will be re-added to the calendar.
No complete home office ban
Instagram's offices are primarily located in Menlo Park at Meta and Facebook's headquarters. According to the memo, employees affected by this change have the option to relocate to a San Francisco office if it makes their commute easier. Furthermore, the facilities in Menlo Park will be expanded to ensure everyone has a desk there. Mosseri also assures that employees can still work from home when necessary. Employees with a contract for fully remote work are not affected by this change. Instagram is also responsible for the microblogging service Threads within Meta.

The announced changes at Instagram are part of a longer-term shift away from remote work policies that were introduced at the beginning of the Corona pandemic, not only at tech corporations. For three years now, Meta has required its employees to be in the office at least three days a week, otherwise, consequences up to termination may follow. At Amazon, the requirement for five days in the office has been in effect for a year. Microsoft only recently began ordering all employees back to the office, but this still involves three days a week. It is unclear whether Instagram's move signals a similar overall shift at Meta.
