Lara Croft is returning, and not just once: Crystal Dynamics, together with Amazon Game Studios, unveiled the titles "Tomb Raider: Catalyst" and "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" at the Game Awards 2025. While "Catalyst" is a completely new installment in the series, "Legacy of Atlantis" is a remake of the first "Tomb Raider" game from 1996.

In both titles, Lara Croft is presented with a new look. Alix Wilton Regan will now take on the role of the feisty archaeologist. The actress is known from games such as "Dragon Age: Inquisition", "Mass Effect 3", and "Cyberpunk 2077", where she portrayed the hacker Alt Cunningham.

"Tomb Raider: Catalyst" sends players to a region of Northern India steeped in mysticism, where a catastrophe has unleashed ancient energies. As rival treasure hunters descend on the area, Lara Croft must stop a looming disaster.

Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game is set to offer the "largest world to date" in a "Tomb Raider" title. As is typical for the series, fans can look forward to expansive landscapes, dark dungeons, environmental puzzles, and customizable gear. The release is planned for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

"Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" is the third remake of the 1996 original, following the Anniversary Edition (2007) and the "Tomb Raider I - III Remastered Collection" from 2024. The title is being developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog. The remake retells the hunt for the legendary artifact Scion but is intended to appear significantly fresher than the classic and the remasters, both graphically and in terms of gameplay. Unreal Engine 5 is also being used here. The launch is scheduled for 2026.

Whether "Tomb Raider" can recapture its former success with this double strike of a sequel and remake remains to be seen. While the last installments "Rise of the Tomb Raider" (2015) and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" (2018) were well-received by fans and critics, they did not set new sales records. Nevertheless, with over 100 million units sold since 1996, "Tomb Raider" continues to be one of the best-known brands in gaming.
