"March of Giants": Ubisoft buys Amazon studio

Ubisoft is acquiring the Amazon Games Montreal studio for an undisclosed sum. Ubisoft also acquires the rights to the Moba game "March of the Giants."

Ubisoft is growing: The French game publisher is acquiring the Amazon team behind the upcoming Moba game “March of Giants,” according to a statement. As part of the deal, the game itself will also go to Ubisoft, where it will be further developed.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Amazon Games Montreal is one of several Amazon game studios in North America. The studio was founded in 2021 and has not yet released any games; “March of Giants” will be the team's debut work.

Ubisoft itself also operates a game studio in Montreal. Several employees from Amazon Games Montreal have formerly worked at Ubisoft. Alex Parizeau was Managing Editor of Ubisoft Toronto before his work at Amazon Games, and Xavier Marquis was Creative Director on “Rainbow Six Siege.” Both are now returning to Ubisoft.

“Returning to Ubisoft brings our journey full circle,” Xavier Marquis is quoted as saying in the statement. “We have created some of our most significant works here, and we look forward to continuing to develop 'March of Giants' within Ubisoft in the future. This game has enormous potential, and I know Ubisoft can help us take it to the next level.”

“By joining Ubisoft, we are uniting behind a shared vision to build 'March of Giants' into one of the next big, long-lasting MOBAs,” adds Alexandre Parizeau.

“Moba” stands for “Multiplayer Online Battle Arena” – the genre is best known for “League of Legends,” but also for “Dota 2.” Generally, the genre is considered somewhat outdated, at least on PC. Ubisoft apparently sees it differently. “March of Giants” combines Moba gameplay with a steampunk setting. The title is set to be Free2Play, and there is no release date yet.
