Fog, Moon, Winter Light: The Pictures of the Week

This week's selection of images again shows how strongly photography works with light and atmosphere. Fog, twilight, and night create reduced spaces in which shapes, lines, and contrasts are particularly effective. Many of the subjects thrive on tranquility and concentration. The gaze is guided purposefully, distractions are kept out. This results in images that stop time and leave room for one's own thoughts.

Thematically, our pictures of the week range between landscape, architecture, and quiet natural details. Warm points of light meet cool colors, clear silhouettes meet soft transitions. Reflections, repetitions, and simple image compositions play a central role multiple times. The shots show how technology and design work together to shape poetic visual stories from the everyday.

Tiger & Turtle in the Fog by Cathos

The sculpture "Tiger & Turtle" looks like a roller coaster, but here people walk up a steel staircase. The curved loops create strong lines that lead diagonally through the image. Due to the dense fog, the sky and background disappear, so the silhouettes of the staircase and the walkers are particularly effective. The repeating loops and the perspective make the image appear like an abstract composition that shows movement and tranquility at the same time.

At Home on Lake Ammer by ek3108

Photographer Elisabeth Krimmer explains her photo: "The picture 'At Home on Lake Ammer' was taken during Corona times on a cold February evening. For me, the special thing is the reflection of the last light in the windows of the hut, which creates a beautiful warm-cold contrast."

A single physalis hangs on a thin stem. Its delicate husk is covered with frost. Ice crystals glitter on its surface. The warm orange of the fruit glows against a soft, green background. The image composition is minimalist. The subject is clearly in focus. The background remains blurred and calm. Due to the shallow depth of field, the physalis is clearly separated from its surroundings. The curved stem creates a gentle line in the image. The cold preserves the shape and enhances the structure. A quiet natural detail with great impact.

A bright moon hangs over the Krähenteich in Lübeck behind heavy clouds. Old trees stand on the bank as dark silhouettes. A historic building shines with its many illuminated windows. The light is calmly reflected in the water, creating long lines. The composition uses clear planes. Sky, architecture, and water are arranged one above the other. The slightly offset moon provides a quiet accent. This creates a calm, almost fairytale-like atmosphere.

Against a deep black background, a heart of sparks glows. Golden light trails outline its shape in the darkness. The image shows a direct gesture with which the photographer wants to thank the users of the c't photo gallery.
