The dating platform for white right-wing extremists “WhiteDate” was investigated by a hacker with the pseudonym “Martha Root.” “Martha Root” was able to view and copy thousands of user profiles. This data has now landed on the Have I Been Pwned project, with the database growing by around 6100 email addresses.

“Martha Root,” along with freelance journalist Eva Hoffmann and investigative reporter Christian Fuchs from “Die Zeit,” shed light on the attack on the website and the information found there at the recent Chaos Communication Congress 39C3. The two journalists had previously examined the dating site in detail for an article in “Die Zeit.” The hacker congress was held under the motto “Power Cycles,” which addressed how the hacker scene deals with the authoritarian shift in the tech scene.

Troy Hunt has now received the dataset and added it to the Have I Been Pwned database. He explains on the HIBP website that the data has been classified as sensitive and is therefore not publicly searchable. After logging in, users can check if their email address is affected; registered users can also search their managed domains under “Business”.

The data includes very extensive information about those affected. According to Hunt, this includes information about physical stature, income, education, and even intelligence quotient. The uploaded photos often reveal further information, such as “real” geographical location due to the EXIF data. Since the affected dating site is about “white, good genes, for the preservation of the bloodline,” information such as “race,” family structure, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation is also included.

“Martha Root” has also made filtered information accessible on the website okstupid.lol – as a corruption of the dating site OkCupid –. According to this, the IT security hygiene was so poor that “even your grandma's AOL account would turn red.” There is a “gender ratio on WhiteDate that would make the Smurf village look like a feminist utopia.” The paywall system was so confusing that the hackers are not sure if they accidentally bought a timeshare in Saxony.
