At the beginning of 2026, WhatsApp will expand its group functions. As Meta announced in the WhatsApp blog, users can now assign individual member labels, create text stickers, and set reminders for group events. The new functions are intended to make group chats clearer and more personal and bring WhatsApp functionally closer to other popular group chat tools like Slack or Discord.
Member labels can be used to make roles visible in the group context. Unlike the global profile name, which is displayed identically in all chats, users can give themselves an individual label in each group that describes their respective function in that chat. For example, in a parent group, it can be indicated whose father or mother the respective participant is. Labels are exclusively for orientation; they are not associated with technical functions or moderation rights. The classic “Admin” label remains unaffected and continues to indicate actual administrative rights.

In parallel, users can now convert any text into stickers. The new text sticker function accesses the existing sticker search: whoever enters a term receives a sticker generated from it.

The third innovation concerns the already existing event function in group chats. Users can now set their reminders for invited people so that everyone arrives at the party on time or dials into calls punctually.
Available immediately
With the new group functions, WhatsApp is getting closer to classic collaboration tools. In Germany, where WhatsApp is considered the de facto standard in many clubs, school classes, parent chats, and small businesses, the role labels are likely to be particularly relevant: they enable a semi-official designation of functions such as “class teacher,” “parent representative,” or “treasurer.”
According to WhatsApp, the new functions are being rolled out for iOS and Android starting immediately; the rollout is happening in waves, so individual users will see the features sooner than others.
