After Siri Fail: Apple Relies on Google Gemini for AI Models
Apple's own AI models apparently aren't cutting it: Google technology is now set to help in the background, likely also with new features for the outdated Siri

The major AI deal between Apple and Google is apparently sealed: Google technology will form the basis for Apple's foundation models in the future, as the iPhone company announced to CNBC on Monday, while emphasizing that this will provide "innovative new experiences." The decision was made after careful consideration, according to the company.
This is a multi-year partnership that includes both Google's Gemini models and Google's cloud technology, CNBC writes. Specific further details have not yet emerged.
Apple's Own Foundation Models Practically Failed
The move would be a silent admission that Apple has apparently been unable to develop competitive foundation models in-house. Currently, the company relies on two in-house language models for Apple Intelligence: a compact one that runs locally on devices, and a medium-sized one in Apple's cloud. Their capabilities and functionality are limited. As an extension, ChatGPT is also available via the Apple Intelligence and Siri user interface – but it runs normally on OpenAI's servers.

Following the stumbling launch of Apple Intelligence and postponed innovations for Siri, Apple's AI chief left his post in December, and this position will no longer be refilled at the highest level. However, Apple has already hired a new AI manager who formerly worked as the engineering lead for the Gemini chatbot at Google. This move already underscored rumors that Gemini-based AI models are ultimately intended to give Siri a new lease on life.
Gemini Models to Revamp Siri
Two years ago, Apple promised a massive new beginning for Siri, the voice assistant system considered completely outdated: it was supposed to work with the user's personal data and be able to perform actions across apps. Initial features were already marketed in an advertising campaign, until Apple finally had to admit that it needed more time for implementation – the features are now expected to follow this year.
Google has caused a stir in the industry with its latest Gemini 3 model and visibly put OpenAI under pressure for the first time at the end of the year. OpenAI countered with hectic model and feature updates around ChatGPT.
