“Civilization 7” will be playable on mobile – at least if you own an Apple device. A version for iPhones and iPads is set to be available via the Apple Arcade game subscription from February 5, Apple announced. The mobile version of “Civ 7” was developed by Behavior Interactive in collaboration with Firaxis.
The mobile version of “Civilization 7” is officially called “Sid Meier's Civilization VII Arcade Edition.” Apple describes it as an “AAA experience on the go” that requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro or a third-generation iPad Pro. The arcade edition of “Civ 7” can also be played on Mac; however, the normal desktop version is also available there, which remains the better choice for dedicated players.
Fewer updates, no DLCs
The mobile version of “Civ 7” is somewhat limited compared to the PC version. The Apple App Store page for the mobile spin-off indicates that the “Arcade Edition” will not receive any DLCs developed for other platforms. Since “Civilization” games typically receive many DLC packs over the years, the mobile version might feel somewhat outdated in the long run.
The developers cannot even promise updates for the main game: “Updates that apply to other platforms after launch may not be released for 'Civilization 7' on Apple Arcade, or may be released later,” the Apple Store states. Furthermore, no multiplayer mode will be supported “at launch” – whether it will be added later is uncertain.
Meanwhile, there are no indications that Apple plans to offer a version of “Civ 7” that can be played without an Apple Arcade subscription. An Android version has also not been announced. The predecessor, “Civilization 6” is also available on Android devices.
The latest installment in the “Civilization” series was released in February 2025 to mixed reviews. On Steam, only 47 percent of users recommend the title. Looking at current player numbers on the Steam tracker SteamDB, it shows that the predecessors “Civ 5” and “Civ 6” are still played by more people than “Civ 7.” (dahe)
