Half a year before the planned release of “Masters of the Universe,” Amazon MGM Studios has released the first full trailer for the second live-action adaptation of the story about He-Man. The clip hints at the backstory of the main character, Prince Adam, who grew up on Earth for safety. There, he searches for a long time for his sword, which gives him superpowers and enables his return to Eternia. There, his arch-enemy Skeletor has taken command. The rest of the trailer consists of fast-cut fight scenes, speeding spaceships, and fantasy buildings. Finally, He-Man gets to swing his sword.

“Masters of the Universe” is one of the most famous brands of the 1980s. Starting from action figures by the US manufacturer Mattel, the first animated series was particularly successful, followed by numerous spin-offs, comics, and later video games. In 1987, Dolph Lundgren embodied He-Man in the first live-action film “Masters of the Universe,” which, however, was largely set on Earth for cost reasons. The film was also a commercial flop for this reason. Apart from the characters, the new “Masters of the Universe” by director Travis Knight now has no narrative connections to its predecessor.

Various studios have tried to create a remake for almost 20 years, with Sony Pictures acquiring the rights to the material in 2009. Since then, there have been repeated reports about writers and directors who were supposed to be working on it, but no progress was made. In 2022, Netflix began the most advanced attempt to date, spending 30 million US dollars on it in a year and a half before the project was ultimately shelved. Only after that did Amazon MGM Studios take over, which emerged from the merger of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Amazon Studios. The main role is now played by Briton Nicholas Galitzine; alongside him, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, and Jared Leto, among others, appear.
