Video platform Vimeo is laying off staff: Italian company Bending Spoons, which bought Vimeo last fall, confirmed the layoffs to Business Insider. It is not known how many people are affected.
According to Business Insider, this is already the second round of layoffs since the acquisition. Immediately after, Bending Spoons had already cut 10 percent of jobs. Bending Spoons is notorious for taking drastic action at acquired companies.
The Italian company spent $1.38 billion on Vimeo in November, which corresponds to $7.85 per share. As part of the acquisition, Vimeo was privatized and is therefore no longer listed on the stock exchange. “As Bending Spoons, we acquire companies with the expectation of owning and operating them indefinitely,” said founder and CEO Luca Ferrari about the acquisition.
Vimeo was founded in New York City in 2004, making it even slightly older than YouTube. However, Vimeo has always unsuccessfully chased YouTube's success. The company IAC, which bought Vimeo in 2006, increasingly positioned the platform for business use. In 2021, Vimeo went public as an independent company.

Bending Spoons also bought Komoot
Bending Spoons is an Italian company based in Milan that has acquired numerous tech companies in recent years. These include Evernote, Meetup, Wetransfer, and Streamyard, among others.
In Germany, Bending Spoons caused a stir primarily through the acquisition of the hiking app Komoot, which was announced in March 2025. According to Wirtschaftswoche, Bending Spoons laid off about three-quarters of the employees after the acquisition. Bending Spoons has also dismissed a large portion of the workforce in other acquisitions.
