Platform Engineering Labs has released version 0.80.0 of its Infrastructure-as-Code platform formae, introducing multi-cloud support. In addition to AWS, the open-source platform now also supports Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and OVHcloud in beta. Also new is a plug-in SDK, which allows developers to individually extend the infrastructure tooling.

Since October 2025, formae has been positioned as an alternative to established IaC tools like Terraform. In contrast to established tools, formae pursues a new approach that promises to detect existing cloud infrastructures automatically and convert them into code. formae is also intended to solve the problem of state files, which can lead to inconsistencies between the planned and actual state of the infrastructure.

With the newly introduced multi-cloud support, Platform Engineering Labs is responding according to the announcement to the needs of many infrastructure teams that, in practice, do not rely on a single cloud provider.

From May 19 to 22, 2026, interested parties at the Cloud Native Festival CloudLand will find a packed line-up with more than 200 highlights – including the two new topic areas "Open Source" and "Platform Engineering". Visitors can expect a colorful mix of predominantly interactive sessions, hands-ons, and workshops, accompanied by a comprehensive supporting program that invites active participation.

Tickets for the festival and accommodation in Heide Park Soltau can be booked via the festival homepage.

formae opens up to individual requirements of users through the new plug-in SDK. The development of providers, which is often time-consuming with traditional IaC tools, should generally be possible in a few hours with the new SDK, while schema guarantees and consistent behavior across different environments are maintained.

"We wanted extending formae to feel like real software development, not a fight with a provider framework," explains Zachary Schneider, co-founder and CTO of Platform Engineering Labs. To this end, the plug-in SDK offers developers a clear interface that focuses specifically on the system to be supported.

The platform retains its technical approach: formae automatically detects infrastructure resources and converts changes into a unified source without explicit state management or complex migrations being required. According to Platform Engineering Labs, the software also works seamlessly with AI coding assistants, so that extensions can be created against a stable, schema-secure interface.

The innovations are primarily intended to address a problem that many users of established IaC tools are likely familiar with: Their existing ecosystems and marketplaces deliver useful results as long as a required integration already exists. If one's own needs deviate from this or the quality does not meet the requirements, teams often only have workarounds left, according to Platform Engineering Labs. These include waiting for updates, adapting their own infrastructure to available solutions, or maintaining forks.

formae is currently available in version 0.80.0 on GitHub under the FSL license (Functional Source License). Details on the SDK can be found in the developer documentation. Those who need further help from the community can find it on Discord.
