The Fritzbox 4630 is expected to be available soon with a recommended retail price of 169 Euros. It is Fritz's most affordable Wi-Fi 7 router, but it also comes with compromises. The model does not connect directly to the internet socket but requires a separate modem. Additionally, despite Wi-Fi 7, its wireless capabilities are modestly equipped.
The manufacturer primarily markets the Fritzbox 4630 for fiber optic connections with a separate provider modem. However, interested users can also operate it with other modems, for example, for DSL over the telephone line. For this purpose, the box has a WAN port that transmits 2.5 Gbit/s to and from the router. Additionally, there are three LAN ports, one with 2.5 Gigabit per second and two with 1 Gbit/s.
The Fritzbox 4630 operates in parallel in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with two MIMO streams each. In the 5 GHz band, this results in a maximum transmission speed of 2880 Mbit/s gross (maximum 80 instead of 160 megahertz signal width); at 2.4 GHz, it's only 690 Mbit/s. The router cannot create a 6 GHz network. The Wi-Fi 7 function Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for simultaneous transmissions in the radio bands is therefore likely to offer only minor advantages.
The more expensive and also modem-less Fritzbox 4690 (starting from 260,61 €) achieves double WLAN transmission rates thanks to additional MIMO streams. It also has one WAN and one LAN port with 10 Gbit/s, as well as three 2.5 Gbit/s LAN ports.

All Fritzbox conveniences on board
As usual, it offers conveniences such as USB (3.2 Gen 1, formerly called USB 3.0, up to 5 Gbit/s), DECT telephony, and smart home support. Via USB, users can connect a printer or a data storage device for their own mini-cloud or media server, for example. With Fritz repeaters or other access points, the Fritzbox 4630 can create a mesh Wi-Fi network.
Fritz states in its announcement that it is immediately available. Retailers should therefore include it in their product range soon. The manufacturer itself has not yet listed the router in its own webshop.
