With extensive updates, Firaxis wants to turn the tide for "Civ 7". In the future, you can play the same civilization for an entire playthrough.

Firaxis is preparing extensive free updates for “Civilization 7” to steer the strategy game back to success. The biggest innovation concerns one of the main criticisms of the title, which will soon be a year old: the age changes. Previously, you had to choose a new civilization when switching between eras. In the future, this will be optional.
With civilization changes, Firaxis wanted to bring fresh wind into each era. For example, the Mongols replaced Egypt, and France replaced the Mongols in the modern era. This was actually a pillar of Firaxis's design for “Civ 7”, but it was not well received by fans. A frequent criticism: The civilization changes made playthroughs feel interchangeable, lacking a unified identity.
“With 'Civilization 7', our goal has always been to provide a more dynamic empire-building experience where your civilization evolves and reinvents itself over time,” Firaxis writes in a blog post about upcoming innovations. “At the same time, we've also heard very clearly that many players want to lead a single civilization from its early beginnings to a highly developed empire.”

Decision at Age Change
In future playthroughs, players will have the option to simply stick with their chosen civilization during an age change. The AI factions will also remain the same if you choose this option. This change will be implemented in a major free update called “Test of Time”, which Firaxis plans to release in the spring. In this update, Firaxis also intends to revise the victory conditions.

“Civilization 7” was released in February 2025 and is considered by fans to be an unloved offshoot of the cult strategy series. Steam player numbers show that “Civ 7” is falling behind its predecessors: According to SteamDB, both “Civ 6” and “Civ 5” are played by significantly more people than “Civ 7”. The strategy game will be released on Apple Arcade on February 5th.
