“GTA 6” is on track. After several release delays, publisher Take-Two confirmed in its latest financial report that November 19th is still the targeted release date. They are so confident that they plan to intensify marketing efforts in the summer.
The release date of “GTA 6” is not only important for impatient gamers: The entire industry plans its releases to avoid launching at the same time as the new Rockstar game. “GTA 5” is one of the highest-grossing video games of all time, and the hype surrounding its successor is gigantic 13 years later. It's no wonder that other manufacturers want to steer clear of the “GTA 6” release date.
In the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, which ended on December 31, 2025, Take-Two recorded net bookings of 1.76 billion US dollars. This represents year-over-year growth.
Disc version is planned
In an interview with Variety, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that “GTA 6” will also be released on physical media. A Polish website had previously spread the rumor that “GTA 6” would only be available as a digital version at launch. This would have caused a stir in the industry and possibly set a precedent. However, Zelnick dismisses this: a purely digital release is not planned.
For years, games have been purchased digitally more often than on physical media. According to a study by the industry association game, around 68 percent of all games purchased in Germany in 2024 were acquired as downloads. Downloads are particularly widespread on PC: here, according to game, 99 percent of all games purchased were acquired as downloads. This figure has been extremely high for years – in 2023 it was 98 percent according to game and 97 percent in 2022.

On consoles, however, disc versions still have a slight lead: 56 percent are still purchased on physical media for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. In 2023, this figure was still 60 percent. “GTA 6” will be exclusively offered on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at release. Whether and when versions for PC or Switch 2 will follow is open.
