Meta ties employee performance to AI usage
Meta wants to introduce a new tool for evaluating the performance of its workforce. This is intended to particularly reward the use of AI.

The US company Meta wants to measure the performance of its employees based on how much they use AI tools in the future. This is according to internal sources, which are available to the industry portal The Information. As early as November last year, Meta announced that it wanted to particularly reward employees who can increase their efficiency through the use of AI applications. The company has now announced measures for the concrete measurement of AI usage.
As part of a company-wide meeting last month, Meta executives informed the workforce about the new performance appraisal and bonus system. According to The Information, Checkpoint, the name of the AI-powered performance tracking tool, should be able to analyze how many lines of code software developers have coded with the help of AI. In addition, Checkpoint should be able to evaluate another 200 data points, such as the number of errors in the code or the amount of code written without AI.
According to internal sources available to The Information, the performance appraisal tool primarily uses data that is already aggregated, such as from Google Workspace applications. Checkpoint is intended to accelerate the already ongoing creation of performance appraisals. However, the tool is not a dedicated activity tracker, but rather an instrument for capturing effectiveness, explained a Meta HR manager.
According to an internal memo, Checkpoint will also be linked to a revised bonus system. Business Insider first reported on this. Employees who achieve a particularly high rating within the four performance categories can expect bonuses of up to 200 percent.
Access to AI technologies expanded
So that employees can increase their effectiveness through the use of AI, the company is now also enabling access to competitor AI models. In addition to its Llama models, Meta employees can now also use Google's Gemini 3 Pro, OpenAI's GPT-5, and other LLMs.
Overall, Meta plans to firmly integrate AI into its daily business operations. Management speculates on enormous efficiency gains. Projects that previously would have required large teams could be handled by individual, highly qualified employees, The Information quotes Meta CEO Zuckerberg.
The company has already begun to lay off parts of its workforce. At the beginning of last year, Meta announced that it wanted to lay off so-called “low performers” – employees who allegedly perform poorly. There has also been massive staff reduction in its AI division and Metaverse division recently.
Whether the use of AI actually increases the efficiency of companies remains debatable. According to a survey by the consulting firm PwC among top managers, this has not been the case in Germany so far: The use of artificial intelligence provides hardly any measurable added value in corporate productivity – despite significant investments.
