In the Messenger Signal, users can now pin messages in chats. The duration is flexible, but the space for it is limited, as Signal announces. “The most frequently asked questions, restaurant reservations, or holiday travel itineraries are already at the top of the header; now they can also be at the top of the chat.” Signal promotes the “pinned messages” feature.
Signal: Pin messages
The feature comes with Signal versions for Android (version 7.71), iOS (version 7.93), and Desktop (version 7.87) on devices. “In the latest versions of Signal, which are currently being distributed, you can pin your most important messages at the top of your personal and group chats,” explain the developers. To pin a message, you need to long-press the message or the image, poll, or file to open the context menu. The new sub-item is called “Pin” in German and is preceded by a thumbtack symbol.
Once a message is pinned, other members of the chat will also see this message as pinned. Up to three messages can be pinned in a chat. Group admins can set who has permission to pin.

Users can choose whether a message should remain pinned for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or forever. After the period expires, the message will be automatically unpinned. By tapping the thumbtack symbol next to the pinned message, it can also be unpinned. If three messages are already pinned, Signal will remove the oldest pinned message to make space for the new message.

Not visible to everyone
Signal assures that the pinned message is only visible if users already have it in their message history. Therefore, anyone who joins a chat after the pinned message arrives or has deleted the original message will not see the pinned message. Following this logic, disappearing messages will also be unpinned when their timer expires and the message is removed from the chat.
In mid-December, WhatsApp and Signal made headlines because it was possible to identify user information based on message confirmation timings. However, certain settings help against this.
