Sony's PlayStation 5 sold eight million units in the past quarter. This is according to the financial figures released by Sony on February 4. The Japanese company's third quarter ran from October 1 to December 31, thus encompassing the strong Christmas sales period.

Previously, Sony had put the PS5 sales figures at 84 million; adding the new 8 million brings the PlayStation to 92 million units sold. This is remarkable because the PS5 thus climbs to 3rd place in the ranking of Sony consoles; it leaves the PlayStation 3 with 87.4 million units sold behind it.

Still ahead of the PlayStation 5 is the first PlayStation with 102.5 million units sold – a mark that the PS5 could still reach. It becomes more difficult with the PlayStation 2, which remains the best-selling game console to date and sold over 160 million units.

PS5 sales figures have slowed somewhat in recent years. In the past Christmas season, the PS5 was not quite as strong as in the same period last year, when 9.5 million consoles were sold. Nevertheless, the current figures are impressive: although the PS5 has been on the market for years, it was more successful in the Christmas quarter than the Switch 2, which was only launched last year. It sold only 7 million units in the Christmas quarter.

While hardware sales declined, Sony was able to generate more revenue from software: in Q3 2025, Sony generated 835.5 billion yen from game sales, a good 6 percent more than in the third quarter of 2024. Significantly more PlayStation games were purchased in 2025 than in the previous year, both from independent developers and from Sony's own studios.

It is still unclear when the PlayStation 6 will be released. Recent statements by AMD CEO Lisa Su suggest 2027 as the release date for the new console generation. However, given persistently high memory prices, a later date is also conceivable.
