“Baldur’s Gate” is becoming an HBO series. Series producer Craig Mazin confirmed corresponding plans to the industry magazine. Mazin, who describes himself as a big fan of Larian's role-playing hit “Baldur’s Gate 3,” is set to write and produce the series. He was previously involved as co-creator in the HBO series “The Last of Us” – also a video game adaptation.

The story of the “Baldur’s Gate” series is set to take place immediately after the events of “Baldur’s Gate 3,” according to Deadline. It is intended to show how the inhabitants of the “Dungeons and Dragons” world deal with the events of the game. In addition to new characters, figures from the game itself are also expected to appear.

Baldur’s Gate 3” is a role-playing game with great freedom of choice and many different endings and fates for individual characters. Prominent companions can, for example, die, transform into mind flayers, or even ascend to a kind of godhood, depending on the player's decisions. The HBO series will therefore have to determine in many cases which player choices and which fates become official canon.

Series creator Craig Mazin has likely seen many different endings himself. He told industry magazine Deadline that he has invested almost 1000 hours in “Baldur’s Gate 3.” “It’s a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast have created,” Mazin said. “I’m a passionate fan of D&D and the brilliant way Swen Vincke and his talented team have adapted the game. I can’t wait to bring ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and all its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as possible.”

Mazin also wants to involve the voice actors from the game for the TV series. The first two installments of “Baldur’s Gate” are expected to play a minor role in the series.

Although Mazin names the Belgian Larian Studios and its head Swen Vincke by name, the developer of “Baldur’s Gate 3” will likely have no say in HBO's series adaptation. The team is not involved, reports gaming journalist Geoff Keighley on X. This is a difference to Mazin's series adaptation of “The Last of Us,” in which Naughty Dog director Neil Druckmann was involved for a long time. The rights to “Dungeons and Dragons” and “Baldur’s Gate” belong to Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast.

Larian is meanwhile busy developing a new role-playing game: With “Divinity,” presented in December, the Belgian studio returns to its fantasy world of Rivellon. Studio head Vincke had repeatedly hinted that the studio felt somewhat creatively restricted by the D&D rule set and existing backstories during the development of “Baldur’s Gate 3.”

The HBO streaming service HBO Max has also been available in Germany since January. When the “Baldur’s Gate 3” series will be available there is unclear. There is no information yet on a timeline for the series adaptation.
