Fritzbox 5690 Pro and XGS get FritzOS 8.20

Fritz (formerly AVM) is rolling out the current FritzOS version 8.20 for the two Fritzboxes 5690 XGS and 5690 Pro. For the XGS model, this is the first update since its market launch in October 2025 with FritzOS 8.02. In the case of the Fritzbox 5690 Pro, version 8.20 appears almost exactly one year after the update to FritzOS 8.03.

The standard Fritzbox 5690 (without a name suffix) already received FritzOS 8.20 at the end of January. All 5690 Fritzboxes are now on the same firmware level. The new features are identical to the various FritzOS 8.20 updates already released for other Fritzboxes.

It includes a new Online Monitor that displays the internet utilization of various devices in the home network. Additionally, there is a so-called Failsafe: users can connect a failover device via WAN, LAN, or USB, which the router will fall back on in case of internet problems. The failover device can be a modem, a router, or a mobile data stick for an alternative internet connection. For the Fritzbox 5690 Pro, a second connection is particularly easy, as the router operates on both DSL and fiber optic connections.

The updates can be initiated via the web interface as usual. By default, it can be accessed in the browser via the IP address 192.168.178.1. Alternatively, Fritz provides the images via a download server.

Lab test expanded

Fritz also draws attention to the expanded test of the lab preview version FritzOS 8.24, which is available for the Fritzboxes 7690, 7590 AX, 7590, 7530 AX, 7530, 6860, 6690, 6660, 6591, and 5530. The update contains exclusively bug fixes and optimizations; among other things, stability is said to increase.
