Huawei's Fiber to the Room now available for everyone
The FTTR system distributes fiber optic cable to any desired room. Retailers are now selling all necessary components.

The Chinese manufacturer Huawei is now also selling its network package for so-called Fiber to the Room (FTTR) to end users. The system replaces in-house Ethernet cabling within a house or apartment and is also suitable for extending a basement connection (Fiber to the Building, FTTB).
The heart of the FTTR system is a GPON main device for the internet connection. It functions as a Wi-Fi router, including 2.5 and 1 Gbit/s Ethernet, and can be connected to a distribution box. The latter provides four ports for so-called sub-FTTR devices, which can be distributed in different rooms and act as access points for Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. The access points form a mesh Wi-Fi network where end devices automatically connect to the best access point. For particularly large houses, users can connect four additional distribution boxes to one distribution box, allowing for a total of 16 access points.
This can be practical, for example, if the walls significantly dampen the Wi-Fi signal. Unlike Wi-Fi repeaters, each access point has the full bandwidth available via the fiber optic cable, without signal loss.

Self-adhesive cables for easy installation
All fiber optic connections use SC/APC connectors. The current generation uses fiber optic cables in a self-adhesive plastic sheathing. The previous combination tool for heating adhesive is no longer necessary. The transparent cables are designed to be barely noticeable along baseboards, joints, door frames, and ceilings. The cables are flat enough to be routed under a room door.
Huawei sells fiber optic cables with pre-terminated connectors in lengths of 10, 20, and 30 meters. The FTTR devices have space within their housings to coil and hide excess cable.

Available from mid-February
In a statement, Huawei promotes the sale of FTTR devices, boxes, and cables via Amazon. The main device OptiXstar V166a-20 from the last generation with Wi-Fi 6 is available there, as is the sub-FTTR device OptiXstar K156a-21 with Wi-Fi 6. Other German retailers have already included the Wi-Fi 7 successors OptiXstar V261a-20 and OptiXstar K251a-21 in their product range. The distribution box and various cables are also available from different retailers.
According to shop information, delivery is expected to begin in the next two weeks. A current main device, a distribution box, four sub-FTTR devices, and five 10-meter cables cost approximately 500 Euros together as an example.
