The “Gothic 1 Remake” is coming a little later: “Early 2026” has now been replaced by a specific release date of June 5, 2026. Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Alkimia Interactive announced the new date with a new trailer. Most recently, the remake of the role-playing game classic from the Ruhr area was postponed last summer. The release date of June 5 applies to PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Playstation 5. Versions for other platforms have not yet been announced.

The role-playing game classic “Gothic” was released in 2001 by Piranha Bytes. The Ruhr area studio no longer exists, and former employees are moving on to new projects. Long-time Piranha Bytes developers Jennifer and Björn Pankratz have founded their project with Pithead Studios and are working on a dungeon crawler called “Cralon.” Other ex-developers are working on an adventure game called “Rootbound”.
Development on a remake of “Gothic” was already underway when Piranha Bytes still existed as a studio. However, the team from the Ruhr area had nothing to do with the remake from the start. Instead, the game is being developed by the Spanish team at Alkimia Interactive, which publisher THQ Nordic founded in Barcelona for the remake.

Demo available
“Gothic” fans have been able to get an idea of the direction the “Gothic” remake is heading for several months now. Since February 2025, Alkimia and THQ Nordic have been offering a playable demo that any user of Steam or GOG can download for free. The demo is quite well received by fans, with 77 percent giving it a thumbs up on Steam. It is often praised for capturing the atmosphere of the original well, while the controls are frequently criticized.
The demo of “Gothic 1 Remake” is a separate game section that will likely not be included in the main game. Instead, it is intended to set the mood for the story and showcase the game systems. Players take on the role of the character Nyras, known to fans of the original as an NPC, before the arrival of the nameless hero.
