Sony is launching a new series of its premium in-ears: the sixth version of the WF-1000 series is set to outperform its predecessors, particularly in terms of active noise cancellation (ANC) and telephony. Sales are expected to begin later this February, with a recommended retail price of 300 euros.
The promise for the sixth version sounds similar to the one Sony made for the fifth generation: telephony and ANC are said to have been improved. While the ANC of the previous version was already among the best in its class, this was not the case for call quality in our review. To change this, Sony is equipping the WF-1000XM6 with more microphones than its predecessor. A total of eight, instead of the six in the WF-1000XM5, are intended to ensure clear calls and effective active noise cancellation. Furthermore, the in-ears adopt the QN3e noise-cancelling processor from the WH-1000XM6 over-ear model. According to Sony, the current generation reduces ambient noise 25 percent better than the previous version. Sony is also complementing the active noise cancellation with improved passive isolation. The foam ear tips are said to mask disruptive noises more effectively than the silicone variants. They come in four different sizes.
The in-ear headphones themselves are slightly smaller than their predecessors, but the housing is more angular, making it less pocket-friendly.

Improved Sound
The manufacturer has also worked on the sound. Newly developed speaker units are said to deliver more precise, less distorted sound than the predecessor. A ten-band equalizer is available in the accompanying app to adjust the sound to personal preferences. In addition to SBC and AAC codecs, the headphones support the high-resolution LDAC codec. Multipoint Bluetooth allows connecting two playback sources simultaneously. According to the manufacturer, antennas 1.5 times larger than in the previous model ensure a more stable connection. The integrated batteries of the WF-1000XM6 are said to last up to eight hours with active noise cancellation. The charging case provides enough battery capacity for an additional 16 hours of playback before needing to be connected to a charger.
