„God of War“: Sony develops remake of the original trilogy
The "God of War" trilogy is being re-released as a remake. Sony has also surprisingly released the Metroidvania "God of War Sons of Sparta".

Sony is developing a remake of the “God of War” trilogy. This includes the three main installments for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, which were created between 2005 and 2010: “God of War,” “God of War 2,” and “God of War 3.”
Sony announced the remake in a short trailer featuring T.C. Carson, the voice actor for Kratos in the first three titles. There are no gameplay snippets, and Sony is still withholding other information. The “God of War” remake is still in early development. It could therefore take years before it is released.

The fact that the “God of War” trilogy is being redeveloped as a remake promises more extensive changes than a remaster. Sony Santa Monica could therefore not only revise the technology but also change the presentation, the story, and the gameplay mechanics.

In the first “God of War” games, protagonist Kratos hacks his way through the Greek pantheon on a largely dull revenge quest with subtly voyeuristic undertones. In contrast, the “new” Kratos from the 2018 and 2022 installments appears bearded, redeemed, and more mature. At least superficially, he fights primarily to protect his family. Furthermore, Sony has toned down the sometimes cartoonish level of violence in the more recent games.
There are also many gameplay changes: the camera moves closer, and close combat becomes more tactical and personal. Small open-world segments are interspersed with linear missions. It remains to be seen whether the remake will emulate the original trilogy or the newer installments more closely.
“God of War Sons of Sparta” surprisingly released
While we still have to wait a bit for the remake and possibly a completely new installment, you can jump right back into the fray with “God of War Sons of Sparta”: Sony has surprisingly released a Metroidvania spin-off developed by Mega Cat Studios.

“Sons of Sparta” is a 2D side-scroller with a pixel look, set in Kratos' youth and telling the backstory of the God of War. “Sons of Sparta” can be purchased for 30 euros in the PlayStation Store. There are no versions for PC and Xbox.
