RAM: Plastic instead of cardboard packaging to prevent fraud

DRAM module manufacturer Corsair is changing the packaging for some RAM kits. Instead of a cardboard box, they will come in transparent plastic in the future. Corsair is reacting to fraud schemes that are particularly lucrative due to the current memory crisis.

Ideally, interested buyers can see at a glance when purchasing in person that original modules are inside the packaging. For the more common online purchase, the belly band is intended to better protect against one of the most common fraudulent practices: fraudsters order the memory, swap the modules, and then return the package. Some retailers only inadequately check returns and then resell them. Previously, Corsair kits only had a transparent round sticker to seal the packaging. This could be opened without damaging the sticker. The belly band, on the other hand, tears open.
Vengeance makes the start
According to the announcement, Corsair is changing the packaging for all variants of its DDR5 RAM from the Vengeance series with two modules, including the normal versions and the RGB variants. To mitigate the environmental impact somewhat, the manufacturer emphasizes the use of recycled plastic.

It may take some time until all old kits with cardboard packaging are sold out. Anyone ordering Corsair memory currently might still receive the old version.
In general, now more than ever: Buyers should inspect RAM modules carefully and read out the specifications after installation. The common reading tool CPU-Z shows the most important data in the Memory tab, including capacity and frequencies and timings set in the BIOS.
