The municipal government of Guadalupe, a suburb of the Mexican metropolis of Monterrey, has announced the introduction of a police squad of four robot dogs. The new unit, designated Division K9-X, is intended for use in security measures during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mexico is a co-host along with the United States and Canada. Four World Cup matches will be held at the Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe (Monterrey) in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo LeĂłn.
According to the municipal government, the robot dogs are designed for prevention and deterrence tasks to support surveillance, care, and control duties. "On the ground, these K9-X robot dogs will assist police with initial deployment with video recordings and will eventually enter dangerous areas, meaning before security forces arrive and to ensure the physical integrity of officers, the robots will intervene in case of a confrontation or with intoxicated individuals," praised Guadalupe's mayor HĂ©ctor GarcĂa GarcĂa at the presentation of the new division last week, highlighting the advantages of this technology and its potential applications.
With the help of the robot dogs, the municipal police are expected to be able to detect unusual situations and respond more quickly and safely to potential risks. The robots are thus intended to support the surveillance of large areas, be capable of detecting unusual behavior or objects, identify unusual crowds, and immediately alert security and civil protection authorities.
Each of the robot dogs is made of durable material to be able to navigate even rough terrain. Furthermore, they are equipped with video cameras, night vision devices, voice control, and warning systems. The investment for the acquisition of the robots amounted to 2.5 million pesos (approximately 123,000 euros).

Last Thursday, the robot dog brigade already had its first official large-scale deployment when it patrolled the Estadio BBVA during a home game of the local first-division club CF Monterrey against CSD Xelaj MC from Guatemala in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. This is the Central American Champions League. The unit conducted preventive patrols outside the stadium, checking entrances and areas with high crowd density. Furthermore, it inspected corridors and common areas within the stadium and reinforced surveillance in heavily frequented spots, as the municipality of Guadalupe announced. It added: "As part of the strategic pre-game surveillance, the robot units also inspected the undercarriages of vehicles" around the stadium, enabling better observation and early detection of potential criminal offenses.
