Storage crisis: Playstation 6 could be postponed until 2028 or 2029

According to a report by Bloomberg, Sony is considering postponing the release of the Playstation 6 to 2028 or even 2029. The background is rising prices and supply bottlenecks for storage components such as RAM and SSDs. According to the report, Nintendo is considering raising the price of the Switch 2 later this year for the same reasons.
The reason for the enormous price increases is the high storage requirement of AI data centers. Because hyperscalers are willing to pay high prices, the market is not currently self-regulating: demand is not decreasing despite the price increases. According to the report by Bloomberg, the situation could even worsen – the business magazine compares the current situation to the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic. Building new production capacities for storage modules takes years.
Steam Deck OLED poorly available
Supply bottlenecks are already occurring among the largest PC manufacturers, who are no longer receiving sufficient RAM modules despite long-term supply contracts. Valve is also affected: on its US website, Valve explains according to The Verge that the poor availability of the Steam Deck OLED is due to bottlenecks in storage components. In Germany, the standard version of the Steam Deck OLED is currently sold out, but the model with 1 terabyte of storage space can still be purchased.
At the beginning of February, Valve had cast doubt on the releases of Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller planned for early 2026 due to the storage crisis.
Release delay would have extensive consequences
Microsoft and Sony have already increased the prices of their game consoles several times in recent years. A postponement of the Playstation 6 release would be no small matter: production plans and supply chains would have to be discarded, hardware configurations rethought. This would be a hard blow for the economic prospects of Sony and independent game developers.

Sony has not yet announced a release date for its Playstation 6, but industry observers have long assumed 2027 as a possible release year. Chip manufacturer AMD recently announced that it is prepared for the release of a next-gen Xbox in 2027. As a rule, the console generations from Xbox and Playstation are released at similar times. New console generations from Sony and Microsoft have so far appeared approximately every seven years; the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S came onto the market in 2020.
