Volla Tablet now also supports Murena's /e/ OS

Germany meets France: The German manufacturer Volla is joining forces with the French software developer Murena: In addition to Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch, the Volla Tablet can now also be configured with the de-Googled Android variant /e/ OS.

/e/ OS without Google

The mobile operating system /e/ OS from Murena, the company founded by Linux veteran Gaël Duval, is based on LineageOS and AOSP (Android Open Source Project). /e/OS is described as an open-source, privacy-friendly operating system that works without Google services. The "Advanced Privacy" feature also blocks trackers in apps and allows the masking of location and IP address.

As alternatives to Google's services, Murena offers its own "online platform for file management, photo libraries, collaborative work on office documents, and synchronization of emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes with other smartphones, a PC or Mac".

To remain independent of Google for search as well, Murena has brought the privacy-focused search engine provider Qwant on board for "Murena Find". Qwant works by default in "No-Tracking" mode, which keeps users' search queries private.

Aged Chip

On the hardware side, the Volla tablet features a somewhat older MediaTek Helio G99 chip, which is produced using a 6 nm process and was introduced in 2022. It is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of flash storage. The internal storage can be expanded by up to 1 TB using a microSD card. The IPS display has a diagonal of 12.6 inches with a resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels.

An optional keyboard can be connected to the tablet via pogo pins. The tablet can be used for sketches or notes in combination with an equally optional stylus.

700 Euros

As mentioned, Volla offers the tablet with Ubuntu Touch or with its own Volla OS, which differs more from conventional Android in its user interface. It is more minimalist but has a similar claim to privacy and data protection as /e/ OS. Users of Volla OS can also install a second operating system in parallel and switch between the two via the "Volla Boot Manager". All three models are available in the Volla online shop and each costs just under 700 Euros. Volla does not disclose information about future updates and security patches.
