Wordpress now has an AI assistant for changing layout and content
Wordpress.com users can now customize websites in natural language. The AI assistant creates images, helps with layout adjustments and wording.

The content management system Wordpress has introduced an AI assistant for websites hosted on Wordpress.com. The artificial intelligence (AI) is intended to understand content and layout to such an extent that changes can also be made in natural language. Additionally, an image generator is integrated, which can create photorealistic images using Google AI (Nano Banana). This is intended to make the use of external AI tools and the associated copy & paste unnecessary.
Ten months ago, Wordpress operator Automattic already introduced a website builder that was supposed to lead to your own Wordpress website with one AI click. Now AI is also being used for the maintenance and optimization of existing websites. This is made possible by Wordpress 6.9, which appeared in December and laid the foundation for AI integration. However, the AI assistant is only available for websites hosted on Wordpress.com and is available to users of the Business and Commerce plans, as well as for websites created with the AI website builder.
Adjustments to layout and style according to AI suggestions
The layout of the Wordpress website can then be adjusted by AI or the style can be adapted. The AI assistant is displayed in a right-hand column after activation, where questions or commands can be typed. For relatively imprecise instructions such as “This area should appear more modern and spacious” or “I would like more fonts for a clear and professional impression,” the AI shows corresponding options as a preview.

Pages and content can also be changed and added. The AI assistant understands commands such as “Add a contact page” and “Rephrase this more confidently.” Translations are also possible with the help of AI. However, the website layout should have been created in a block style; the AI cannot currently handle classic styles.
AI image generation directly on Wordpress.com
In the Wordpress media library, AI images can now also be generated via text prompts, provided the AI assistant is activated for the website. For this, Google's image generator, Nano Banana, is used. Instructions such as “Create an image of a three-colored cat reading a book” will then generate a corresponding image. Already generated images can also be further modified, for example, to place the cat in a specific position or to adjust the image's colors.

The notes introduced with Wordpress 6.9, which are primarily used for teamwork within the editor, can also be used for the AI assistant. If “@ai” is prepended to the note, corresponding instructions can be given to the AI. As examples, Wordpress mentions “Give me ideas for headlines for this article” and “Give me examples to support this paragraph.”
The AI assistant is activated in the website list in the settings on Wordpress.com. Users who created their websites using the AI website builder will automatically have the AI assistant available, regardless of the selected plan.
