Sony's lead PlayStation architect Mark Cerny has announced an improved AI upscaler for the PlayStation 5 Pro. A new firmware is expected to be available in the coming weeks, bringing the revised version of Playstation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). The first game to use the new upscaler is Resident Evil Requiem, which has recently been released.

According to Cerny, the new PSSR version stems from close cooperation with AMD, which developed the main processor for the PS5 Pro for Sony. Cerny refers to AMD's upscaler FSR 4, which has been available for desktop graphics cards of the Radeon RX 9000 series since last year. Sony has refined this technology over the past six months, making it usable on the Playstation 5 Pro.

Will FSR 4 soon be available for older PC Radeons?
The explicit reference to FSR 4 makes PC gamers sit up and take notice. So far, AMD has exclusively released FSR 4 on the 9000 series Radeons; these use the RDNA4 graphics chip architecture. The Playstation 5 Pro, on the other hand, uses an RDNA3 GPU with Sony-specific extensions. There is currently no FSR 4 for desktop graphics cards of the RDNA3 generation (Radeon RX 7000).
However, there have been rumors circulating for some time that FSR 4 would generally work on RDNA3 GPUs, albeit with stronger performance drops. These statements are based on internal beta drivers from before the official FSR 4 launch, where the technology was still selectable on RDNA3. And last week, the news spread that a leaked DLL file with FSR 4.1 would again support RDNA3 GPUs. This file, in turn, originates from a newer development path than that of the current driver version Adrenalin 26.2.2, which was released a few days ago.
