New Apple Monitors: Studio Display 2 and Studio Display XDR
Apple has standardized its monitors. However, 120 Hz is only available on the expensive, suddenly smaller XDR model – with 5K instead of 6K resolution.

New iPhones and iPads are followed by MacBooks and external displays: On Tuesday, Apple announced the long-awaited new editions of the Studio Display and a new Studio Display XDR – the latter replaces the "Pro Display XDR". With the Studio Display 2, the innovations remain manageable: The 5K monitor with a screen diagonal of 27 inches offers a according to the manufacturer "even better" 12-megapixel webcam – the dismal 12-megapixel camera of its predecessor, however, received a lot of justified criticism.
New Display with Apparently Old Panel
Regarding the panel, probably still using IPS technology, there are surprisingly apparently no new developments. According to Apple, it remains at a peak brightness of 600 candelas per square meter (cd/m²), and support for HDR content playback is missing. As with its predecessor, it remains at a refresh rate of only 60 Hz, which seems outdated. New are two Thunderbolt 5 ports with 96 watts of charging power; a Thunderbolt 5 cable is included. Two additional USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2, 10 Gbit/s) can be used for slower peripherals and charging devices. Apple also promises deeper bass in the integrated speaker system.

In the basic configuration, offered by Apple for 1700 Euros, the stand only allows adjusting the angle. Those who want to change the height must order a compatible monitor stand for an additional charge, place books underneath, or choose the adapter for a VESA mount. A less reflective version of the monitor with "nano-texture glass" also remains in the product line.
Studio Display XDR Replaces Apple's Pro Display
The Studio Display XDR is the actual newcomer: Instead of the 32 inches and 6K of its predecessor Pro Display XDR, the new monitor offers a diagonal of 27 inches with 5K resolution (5120 × 2880 pixels). According to the data sheet, the XDR uses a Mini-LED backlight with 2304 locally dimmable zones, largely covers the DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, and has a peak brightness of 2000 cd/m². Together with zone dimming, proper HDR representation should be possible. It is also Apple's very first external monitor to display 120 Hertz. Adaptive Sync allows dynamic display between 47 and 120 Hertz.
Like the Studio Display, the Studio Display XDR is now equipped with three microphones and a system of six speakers, both of which were missing from the previous XDR. The monitor also offers four USB-C ports, two of them with Thunderbolt 5. The stand is now an integral part of the Studio Display XDR's scope of delivery and is adjustable in tilt and height. This costs 3500 Euros. Both screens will go on sale on March 11th.
