Pixel Drop in March: What's new in the update for Pixel devices
Google has released the first Pixel Drop of the year based on Android 16 QPR3. Among other things, the update brings customization options for app icons.

After the Pixel Drop from November 2025 and the update to Android 16 QPR2 in December, Google is releasing the next major update in early March 2026. The Pixel Drop is primarily aimed at Google's Pixel devices, but some features are usually distributed to all Android devices. One was first revealed for the Galaxy S26.
Enhanced Circle to Search
The latter refers to an expansion of Circle to Search: With the update announced with the Galaxy S26, it is possible to explore every single detail of an image, according to Google. As an example, Google mentions clothing search: “Simply circle the entire outfit, and Google will find all the clothes you see – from the warm wool coat to the Oxford shoes.”

According to Google, the new AI search is possible with almost all objects and things. At launch, the advanced feature will be available for the Pixel 10 series in addition to Samsung's new top models.
In addition, sports results can be displayed in real-time directly on the lock screen in the live view of Pixel phones. Financial information can also be displayed via the live view. However, this feature has been available on a Pixel 10 Pro for several days now.
Music Recognition as a Separate App
Music recognition on Google's Pixel devices was previously part of the system. The manufacturer has now decoupled it and offers it as a separate app in the Play Store, but still only for Pixel. With the app, recognized music can be kept track of, and in the “History” tab, users will find all recognized songs in one place. With a tap on a song, you can play it on your preferred music app.

Individual Icons for the Home Screen
With the Pixel Drop, Google is also expanding the possibilities for home screen customization. After app icons can be visually unified on request with Android 16 QPR2, and Google has introduced theme packs, users can now create their own app icons in the settings under “Wallpaper & Style” > Icons > Create.

At launch, users can choose from five AI-generated styles “to give all icons on the display a uniform look.” Furthermore, a new design pack, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” will soon be available.
Scam Detection Comes to Germany
For the Pixel 9 and newer, Google is now bringing the scam detection feature, available in the USA for some time, to Germany, among other countries. With the update, it lands on Pixel smartphones in Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Spain.

According to Google, the feature is capable of recognizing certain voice patterns commonly used by scammers. The function notifies users if a conversation is suspicious.
Pixel Watch Reminds You of Forgotten Smartphone
Android 16 QPR3 also expands the collaboration between Pixel smartphone and watch: According to Google, you will soon receive a notification if you accidentally leave your smartphone behind. It will also be automatically locked as soon as you move too far away. Furthermore, a connected smartwatch and smartphone should enable faster identity verification for seamless, secure access, according to the manufacturer.
In addition, you should now be able to find your belongings faster with the Pixel Watch using “Find My Device.” A device within Bluetooth range can be made to ring via the watch; if it is out of range, the device's location will be displayed on a map, including directions.

Furthermore, Google is extending the hand gestures introduced with the Pixel Watch 4 to the Pixel Watch 3. With the two-finger pinch gesture or by turning the wrist, users can answer calls, take photos, or pause music. Also new is the so-called express payment: if activated, you only need to hold the Pixel Watch to the reader to pay.
The update is available for Pixel smartphones from the Pixel 6 onwards. Not all functions are available for all models. Google also states that various bugs have been fixed with the update. An overview can be found in the support document. In addition, the new version closes numerous security vulnerabilities.
