It is one of the most unusual series spin-offs: Ubisoft is re-releasing the fan favorite “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.” The action game from Ubisoft Montreal, originally released in 2013, is being re-released as a “Resynced” version – behind this is likely to be a full remake, not just a technical remaster.
–Assassin’s Creed– fans have been expecting the announcement of a remake of “Black Flag” for months, following several credible reports from industry insiders. Ubisoft has now confirmed the title in a blog post about the future of the “Assassin’s Creed” series. However, details on gameplay mechanics or the release date are not provided in the post.
The only image released so far is also an artwork. With “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” Ubisoft has extensively revised its Anvil engine, adding ray-tracing lighting, among other things. It remains to be seen whether the remake of “Black Flag” will also use the new effects or fall back graphically to the standard of somewhat older titles like “Mirage.”
Pirate adventure instead of climbing
“Black Flag” is one of the most popular games in the “Assassin’s Creed” series among fans. Instead of exploring a huge city with tall buildings, in “Black Flag,” you sail as pirate Edward Kenway from one Caribbean island to the next. Naval battles play a major role. The fact that Ubisoft is re-releasing “Black Flag” in particular could also be due to synergy effects within the development studios: With “Skull and Bones,” Ubisoft released an online pirate game in 2024 – perhaps some assets and historical research can be reused for “Black Flag Resynced.”

In addition to the remake of “Black Flag,” Ubisoft has several new “Assassin’s Creed” installments in development. Under the codename “Hexe,” a new spin-off is still being created, which Ubisoft describes as “unique” and “dark.” In contrast to many recent “Assassin’s Creed” installments, “Hexe” will focus on the story rather than the open-world sandbox. Under the codename “INVICTUS,” a PvP multiplayer spin-off is also being created.
“Assassin’s Creed: Unity” will receive a 60 fps patch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft also promises news soon about the Netflix adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed.”
