Anyone watching YouTube on their TV might see more unskippable 30-second ads. YouTube has made it easier for advertisers to book such spots.
Google is informing its advertisers about this in a blog post that was published at the beginning of March. The new advertising format was tested last year but is now available worldwide without restrictions. It allows advertisers to run dynamic campaigns with multiple spots. An AI is supposed to select whether a user is shown a short 6-second spot, a longer 15-second ad, or the full 30-second clip without a skip function. These ad formats are intended for the YouTube app for TVs and TV streamers.
Google's blog post is aimed at advertisers and accordingly emphasizes the maximized advertising impact that such campaigns are intended to develop: “AI-powered precision helps drive greater efficiency across multiple non-skip ad formats, delivering more unique reach and impact compared with manual mixes of single-format campaigns,” YouTube writes.
30-second spots are not new
It is unclear how much this will be noticeable to users. Fundamentally, advertising partners could already book unskippable 30-second spots before: In 2023, YouTube introduced such unskippable 30-second ads for YouTube Select – a premium advertising program that allows partners to place their spots on particularly popular and ad-friendly videos. However, through the new advertising program, such spots could now be shown on additional videos.

Those who don't want to see ads on YouTube and don't want to engage in a cat-and-mouse game with ad blockers need a subscription. For the entry-level subscription, Premium Lite, users pay 6 euros per month. The full Premium subscription costs more than double that per month at 13 euros. It's a bit cheaper if you're a student (7.50 euros per month) or pay for a whole year (130 euros, i.e., 10.8 euros per month). YouTube Premium's family subscription covers up to six people and costs 24 euros per month.
