Jensen Huang on Shitstorm: Gamers "are wrong" about DLSS 5
It's a classic shitstorm: Many gamers online are angry at Nvidia because of DLSS 5. CEO Jensen Huang defends the technology.

“They're completely wrong”: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang defended the AI technology DLSS 5 in a Q&A session at GTC. Many gamers have been heavily criticizing Nvidia on social media since the introduction of DLSS 5. They see the technology as AI slop and fear that developers are losing creative control over the look of their game.
That's precisely what isn't supposed to happen, Huang told the tech magazine Tom's Hardware in a GTC Q&A. “DLSS 5 fuses controllability of geometry and textures and everything in the game with generative AI. It's not post-processing; it’s not post-processing at the frame level, it's generative control at the geometry level.” That is all under the direct control of the developers.
In other words, DLSS 5 isn't just slapped over the finished game to do whatever it wants. Instead, developers can anchor the AI technology deeper into their game and gain control over where DLSS 5 operates and how the technology should behave. In an FAQ, Nvidia had communicated this from the start, but nothing of that is visible in the official comparison videos that went viral.

Overwhelming Criticism
The reaction in many corners of the internet is remarkably drastic: On Reddit and X, game fans are venting their anger with furious posts and scathing memes. The AI-processed faces of game characters in particular are the focus of criticism, which is largely understandable. But the anger has escalated so much that, for example, YouTubers who provide differentiated DLSS 5 assessments are facing death threats.
Experience shows that negative reactions to early versions of DLSS technology can fade over time. The original upscaling technology of DLSS was also initially scorned by many. Today, many gamers find DLSS 4.5 prettier than native resolution in a blind test. Meanwhile, DLSS 5 follows a completely different concept than previous iterations: instead of improving performance through AI technology, DLSS 5 uses generative AI to change game graphics – for many, that is fundamentally a red flag.

Release in Autumn
Nvidia and development partners have until the release for RTX 50 graphics cards in autumn to tune DLSS 5. Afterward, the technology is likely to be further developed for years to come. The much-criticized comparison images show potential despite uncanny valley faces. For example, DLSS 5 can significantly improve lighting and material properties in “Starfield.”
According to Nvidia, Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Games are among those who want to use DLSS 5 in video games.
