Intel is introducing the mobile processors Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus. Like the Plus models for desktop PCs, they belong to the Arrow Lake Refresh series. The new edition for notebooks is only logical: the HX processors use the same chips as the desktop CPUs, so Intel can easily adopt the optimizations. They are intended for high-end notebooks and mobile workstations for which there are no newer Panther Lake models.

The notebook types receive two improvements: The data connection between the chiplets (die-to-die clock frequency) increases from 2.1 to 3.0 GHz. Intel also offers a Binary Optimization Tool that optimizes the code for the Plus processors in certain games and applications. The manufacturer sees the optimizations exclusively for the Arrow Lake Refresh.

Intel shows comparison benchmarks in 32 games, created in Full-HD resolution (1920 Ă— 1080 pixels) and high graphics settings. The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus is said to be on average eight percent faster than the previous top model, the Core Ultra 9 285HX. In 12 out of 32 games, the Binary Optimization Tool provides advantages. In applications, Intel states an advantage of seven percent.

The product pages of the new processors still show differences in clock frequencies: Although the efficiency cores can clock slightly higher at their peak, the base clock of the E-cores drops by 300 MHz to 1.8 GHz. For the performance cores, the base clock drops slightly, while the maximum turbo remains the same. The Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus reaches up to 5.5 GHz, the Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus 5.3 GHz.

Notebook manufacturers can now introduce devices with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus. Numerous manufacturers are converting existing designs.

Meanwhile, there will be no Core Ultra 9 290K Plus for desktop PCs because Intel has less room for improvement there. The already available Core Ultra 9 285K already has an increased die-to-die clock frequency with the 200S Boost. The Binary Optimization Tool alone apparently does not justify a new edition.
