Amazon eero Outdoor 7: Expensive Wi-Fi base with IP66 protection for outdoors
Amazon is bringing the eero Outdoor 7 to Germany. It is particularly well protected against wind and weather, but also costs a lot.

The eero Outdoor 7 is appearing in Europe 1.5 years after its US launch. Its special feature is IP66 protection: the Wi-Fi 7 base is designed to withstand heavy rain, snow, dust, and extreme temperatures from -40 to +55 °C. This means it can also withstand cold winters; however, shading in the summer is advisable.
Amazon describes the eero Outdoor 7 as a router, although it is in fact an access point that wirelessly extends the wired network. Consequently, the manufacturer does not intend for it to be used directly with a modem, but rather as an extension of an existing eero network. Amazon advertises a coverage of up to 1390 m². As a smart home hub, it supports Thread, Zigbee, and Matter (in each case as a controller) as well as Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0.

Power only via LAN cable
The eero Outdoor 7 must be supplied with energy via the network cable (Power over Ethernet). If you don't have a suitable infrastructure, use the included 30-watt injector – a power adapter with an Ethernet port.

The access point supports Wi-Fi 7 with a combined transmission rate of around 3.5 Gbit/s gross. It operates with two MIMO streams, each in the 2.4 (690 Mbit/s) and 5 GHz (2880 Mbit/s) bands. It is unclear how the eero Outdoor 7 behaves outdoors: in the 5 GHz band, WLAN operation outside buildings is only permitted in the upper block (channels 100 to 140) in the EU due to regulations. However, not all devices adhere to this.
The biggest drawback, meanwhile, is the price: Amazon charges 470 Euros for the eero Outdoor 7 including the injector. Those who can make do with weaker IP54 protection can get significantly cheaper outdoor repeaters. For example, Fritz offers the Fritz-Repeater 1610 Outdoor.
