FritzOS 8.25 fixes faulty hardware acceleration on initial routers
Fritz is distributing FritzOS 8.25 for the two Fritzboxes 6660 and 6591. Among the numerous bug fixes is a fix for the package management.

The first two Fritzboxes are receiving a final fix for the faulty FritzOS versions 8.20 and 8.21. Update 8.25 corrects the package management on the cable Fritzboxes 6660 and 6591 when hardware acceleration is enabled.
The manufacturer writes about this in the update overview: “Fixed: In conjunction with active packet acceleration, a loss of ICMP packets could occur.” ICMP stands for Internet Control Message Protocol. Hiccups in package management led to slow transfer rates and, in some cases, stuttering.
Affected users should temporarily disable hardware acceleration. Instead of a specialized chip block, the CPU cores will then take over package management. The manufacturer previously tested the fix from FritzOS 8.25 in the lab version 8.24. This is still available for download for numerous other Fritzboxes.
The final FritzOS 8.25 is expected to be released for other routers in the coming weeks and months. As usual, the manufacturer makes no specific promises here.

Mainly bug fixes
Fritz also lists numerous other bug fixes and improvements, from generally higher stability to corrected displays in the web interface. In addition, there is a cable router-specific innovation: a revised graphical interface for the integrated cable TV tuner.
The update can be initiated for the Fritzboxes 6660 and 6591 as usual via the web interface. By default, it can be accessed in the browser via the IP address 192.168.178.1. Alternatively, the manufacturer provides image downloads for the Fritzbox 6660 and for the Fritzbox 6591. In the case of provider devices, the providers, such as Vodafone, are responsible for the updates. Experience shows that this can take time.
