According to a report, Nintendo plans to drastically reduce the production of the Switch 2 after the company failed to meet its sales forecasts for the Christmas business 2025. As Bloomberg reports, the Japanese manufacturer is said to be reducing production from 6 million to 4 million units in the current quarter. This corresponds to a reduction of one third compared to the original plan. Nintendo also intends to produce less in April than previously planned.
Switch 2 with a record start
The Nintendo Switch 2 initially had a record-breaking start in June 2025 with 3.5 million units sold in the first four days. This was around 800,000 units more than the original Switch sold in its first month. Nintendo had therefore raised its sales forecast from 15 million consoles to 19 million units. But after that, the sales figures for the Switch 2 could not meet the high expectations. While according to Bloomberg's sources, demand for a cheaper but less profitable variant remains strong in Japan, sales in the USA in particular have not been able to build on this sustained success.

As a result, Nintendo shares fell by up to 6.3 percent in Tokyo, marking the steepest daily loss since February 4, 2026. The price temporarily dropped to 8835 yen (approximately 48 euros), wiping out all gains from a rally at the beginning of the month. This was triggered by the surprising success of the new Pokémon game "Pokopia". According to Bloomberg's informants, the production cut should nevertheless have no impact on the 20 million Switch-2 devices estimated by analysts to be sold in the fiscal year ending in March.
Like all electronics manufacturers, Nintendo is under high cost pressure with the Switch 2, partly due to rising memory prices. The higher costs had prompted Nintendo to consider a price increase for the device – this factor played no role in the production cut. The production cuts are primarily due to declining consumer demand, according to Bloomberg's sources.
For the European market, Nintendo is preparing a Switch-2 variant with a removable battery to comply with EU regulations that require easily replaceable batteries from 2027 onwards.
