HBO Max: New "Harry Potter" series coming at Christmas
The new "Harry Potter" series from HBO Max will launch at Christmas. A first trailer shows new actors and familiar designs.

HBO's new “Harry Potter” series is expected to air starting Christmas 2026. Warner Bros. announced this with the release of a first trailer. The first season of the series is to cover the first book, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone”; subsequent seasons are also planned to cover one book each. Warner Bros. had previously targeted 2027 as the launch year.

In contrast to the successful films, HBO's “Harry Potter” series takes more time for the details from the book. Author J. K. Rowling is involved in the series as a producer. The three main characters, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, are played by Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton. Nick Frost will slip into the role of Hagrid, John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape.
Mark Mylod directs
Warner has hired Francesca Gardiner as showrunner and producer, who was involved as a writer in the successful HBO series “Succession,” among others. Mark Mylod will also be a producer and is set to direct several episodes. Mylod was also responsible for several “Succession” episodes as director but was also involved in “The Last of Us” series.

The first trailer again shows that HBO is not completely changing the familiar designs from the films for the series: costumes and sets look very similar to the film templates. Previously, HBO Max had already released individual images that also conveyed the impression: HBO does not want to reinvent the “Harry Potter” design language with the series.
It is still unclear at what rhythm the episodes of “Harry Potter” will be broadcast – and how many there will be in the first season. HBO usually releases new episodes weekly.
HBO Max in Germany
Since January, the Warner streaming service HBO Max has been available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. The streaming offering includes, among other things, the “Harry Potter” films as well as renowned series such as “Game of Thrones,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Those who want to watch the content in 4K resolution currently pay 17 euros per month. All HBO Max subscription prices are expected to increase by one euro in January 2027, when “Harry Potter” is likely to become gradually available.
Warner Bros. recently agreed to an acquisition offer from Paramount after Netflix withdrew from the bidding. As part of the deal, the journalistic program of Warner, including CNN, is to move to Paramount along with the entertainment division. Paramount CEO David Ellison is the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who is considered a Trump supporter.
