JSON Alexander, a new extension for Firefox and Chrome, automatically formats JSON data, for example, sent by an API. The add-on enhances the rudimentary browser displays, particularly with syntax highlighting and a tree view.

The add-on offers a range of convenience features that go beyond the standard browser display. In addition to syntax highlighting and collapsible structure trees, these include, for example, additional information when hovering over a field or a parallel data view as windows.data in the console.
JS author and podcaster Wes Bos has released JSON Alexander under the MIT license. Previously, he had doubts about the "Heads Up" add-on, which offers similar functions, because according to Bos, it implements web tracking on websites. The editorial team could not verify this.

The add-on is not yet available in the browser stores; users must install it manually. For Firefox, they also need to disable the standard JSON mechanism. Instructions can be found in the repository. The tool's name alludes to the American actor Jason Alexander.
