German manufacturer Infineon led the global microcontroller market in 2025 with 23.2 percent. According to market research firm Omdia's estimation models, the total revenue from microcontrollers in 2025 was around 22.1 billion US dollars, a slight decrease of 0.3 percent compared to 2024. Against this trend, Infineon managed to increase its market share by 1.8 percentage points.

In second to fifth place are NXP, Renesas, STMicroelectronics, and Microchip. The five leading microcontroller manufacturers account for around 80 percent of the total market, estimates Omdia.

With Infineon, NXP, and STMicro, three of the top five microcontroller manufacturers are from Europe. Renesas is a Japanese company, and Microchip is based in the USA.

The remaining 20 percent of the market is distributed among numerous manufacturers. Unlike microprocessors (Microprocessor Units, MPUs), there are still many different processor cores for microcontrollers (Microcontroller Units, MCUs), including RISC-V, ARC, Xtensa, MIPS, MSP430, AVR, PIC, RL78, and others, in addition to ARM. Furthermore, the larger MCU manufacturers each produce numerous variants of their chips.

A portion of their microcontrollers are manufactured by large European manufacturers at chip foundries such as TSMC, Globalfoundries, or UMC. Infineon and NXP are also partners in TSMC's ESMC Dresden fab currently under construction. Additionally, Infineon and STMicro operate their own fabs and packaging plants in Asia.

STMicro also cooperates with the Chinese contract manufacturer Huahong to sell locally manufactured microcontrollers in China.

In 2020, Infineon acquired US chip manufacturer Cypress and its PSoC microcontrollers. NXP, in turn, acquired the former Motorola division Freescale in 2015. In 2016, Microchip took over competitor Atmel. Renesas was formed from the merger of the chip divisions of Hitachi, NEC, and Mitsubishi.
