Exorbitantly expensive 8-terabyte Samsung SSD 870 Evo
Samsung is expanding its well-established SATA SSD series 870 Evo with an 8 TB version – at a list price of €2641. It's cheaper in stores.

Although NAND flash memory chips and SSDs are currently extremely expensive, Samsung is introducing a new SATA SSD with a particularly high capacity: the SSD 870 Evo with 8 terabytes (TByte/TB).
Samsung lists the new top model of the SSD series 870 Evo at a price of €2640.99. The SSD is available significantly cheaper in online retail. Nevertheless, it costs more than twice as much as the last available 8 TB SATA SSD from Samsung during its cheapest times, the SSD 870 QVO with 8 TB. It could still be found for under 600 euros in mid-2025.
However, the 870 QVO 8 TB is no longer available. It was equipped with Quad-Level-Cell (QLC) NAND flash chips. The SSD 870 Evo with 8 TB fundamentally uses faster Triple-Level-Cell (TLC) chips, which also withstand more write cycles.

Samsung has been selling the SSD series 870 Evo since early 2021, previously with a maximum of 4 TB. The 8 TB version also features the SATA controller named "MKX", which has been in use for five years.
The 2.5-inch SSD has a DRAM cache with 8 GB capacity (LPDDR4-SDRAM). Samsung specifies the write endurance (Endurance) as 4.8 Petabytes (4800 Terabytes Written, TBW).
The ancient SATA 6G interface limits the data transfer rate to a meager 560 MB/s for reading and 530 MB/s for writing. An advantage is that the SSD is also compatible with older computers and NAS.
