A huge island, plenty of resources, obsidian as a new material – but also a volcano that could erupt at any moment. Ubisoft has announced the contents of “The Promise of the Volcano,” the first major expansion pack for “Anno 117: Pax Romana.” It is scheduled to be released on April 23.

According to Ubisoft Mainz, the volcanic island of Cinis is the largest island ever buildable in “Anno” history – even larger than the DLC island Crown Falls for "Anno 1800." On Cinis, a new deity can be worshipped and the resource obsidian can be mined, which can be used to produce products for more demanding population classes. Ubisoft cites obsidian god statues and board games as examples.
Ubisoft does not explain whether and how the active volcano can be appeased. Apparently, Ubisoft wants to encourage a balance between risk and reward: Cinis offers many advantages but is constantly threatened by eruptions.
At least two more expansions
"The Promise of the Volcano” is the first real expansion pack for “Anno 117” – so far, only a cosmetic DLC, the “Marvellous Mosaic Pack,” has been released. The individual price for the volcanic island expansion is not yet known, but it is part of the Year 1 Pass, which is sold for 35 Euros.

In addition to “The Promise of the Volcano,” the DLC Pass is expected to include two more expansions, which will follow at a later date. Expansion 2 will come with a new monument: the racetrack. The third and largest DLC of the package will be particularly exciting: it goes to the “golden land of the pyramids,” Ubisoft wrote when announcing the DLC package. Egypt will thus be the first wholly new region in “Anno 117.” Such regions usually come with their own civilization levels, goods, and game mechanics.
This could do “Anno 117” good: the lack of complexity, especially compared to “Anno 1800,” is one of the biggest criticisms of the city-building strategy game from Ubisoft. The DLC packages could specifically support the later stages of the game with additional challenges. The development of the DLCs for “Anno 117” is financially supported by federal funding for games, according to the industry magazine Gameswirtschaft.
