Apple reportedly working on four different designs for its first smart glasses

That Apple is working on its own smart glasses has long been no secret. However, it is now reported that the iPhone company is already developing at least four different frame designs for the first version of its smart glasses, which will be available in different colors. Furthermore, the camera could be oval instead of round to differentiate itself from other smart glasses. According to current plans, the Apple smart glasses are expected to hit the market in 2027.
Last fall, it was said that Apple allegedly wants to build display glasses because of Meta, after Meta Platforms unveiled the “Ray-Ban Display” smart glasses with integrated screen and sEMG armband. Apple apparently scrapped a lightweight version of the Vision Pro VR headset originally planned for 2027 and has shifted its resources to the development of display glasses.

Now, well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman at Bloomberg reports on the current status of Apple's smart glasses development. According to employees working on the project, the company plans close integration with the iPhone and its ecosystem. Its AI assistant Siri is set to be significantly improved with iOS 27 by next year, which would coincide with the launch of the first Apple smart glasses.

Apple is likely not limiting itself to a single-frame design. Although the Apple smart glasses are manufactured by EssilorLuxottica, which also produces Meta's smart glasses and with which the Facebook company currently holds over eighty percent market share. However, Apple is reportedly focusing on variety and high-quality materials. The latest prototypes were made of acetate, a bio-based plastic derived from natural raw materials that is known for its high strength, color variety, and durability in high-quality eyeglass frames.
